Types of Plugs that Electric Vehicles Use
Congratulations!! You are about to learn more about your electric vehicle. Knowledge is power.
There are 4 Types of Plugs that Electric Cars Use.
J1772 Plug
The J1772 Plug is used for Level 2 Charging. The J1772 Plug is known as the Universal Plug because EVERY Make and Model of Electric Vehicle can use this plug. Tesla, Rivian, Chevrolet, Ford, Hyundai, Lexus, Porsche, Polestar, etc.
CHAdeMO Plug
The CHAdeMO Plug is used for Level 3 Charging. The CHAdeMO Plug is only used by two different makes and models of Electric Vehicles. Only the Nissan Leaf and the Cadillac Lyric will use the CHAdeMO Plug.
CCS Plug
The CCS Plug is used for Level 3 Charging. The CCS acronym stands for "Combined Charging System", because they combined the J1772 plug with two D/C Fast Charging connectors at the bottom. It's a smart design. Because of the intelligent design, the majority of Electric Vehicles use this plug. Chevrolet, Ford, Rivian, Polestar, Lexus, Porsche, Hyundai, Kia, etc.
Tesla Supercharger Plug
The Tesla Supercharger Plug is used for Level 3 Charging. Only Tesla vehicles will use the Tesla Supercharger Plug.
There are 4 Types of Plugs that Electric Cars Use:
J1772 Plug, CHAdeMO Plug, CCS Plug and Tesla Supercharger Plug.
In 2024 all Rivian vehicles, the Rivian R1T, Rivian R1S and Rivian EDV will switch from the CCS Plug to the Tesla Plug. This means that 2024 model Rivian vehicles will be reliant upon the Tesla Charging Network.
I disagree with this decision. It doesn't make sense in a way. Chargepoint has 145,000 chargers, while Tesla has 45,000 Chargers in the United States. It actually reduces the number of chargers that Rivian drivers will have access to. Also, at what point do monopoly rules come into play? Elon can't control everything.
The CHAdeMO plug is less popular in North America, yet in Asia this type of plug is very popular for electric cars. Yes, electric vehicles are sold all over the world. And Yes, electric car manufacturers will alter their vehicle to better suit different markets
